Strongroom vs Gardeners

On a glorious day up North (London), GCC arrived at Highgate Woods with signs of little confidence given past experiences at the ground in recent years plus a loss against the days oppo, Strongroom, a mere 2 weeks previous. At least GCC had 11 players that turned up on time – which meant a couple of begrudging GCC newbies were sent out to field in the scorching sun to assist the opposition after Fatty won the toss and decided to bat.

Waiting batsmen had much to smile about early on. Locals were suitably dressed for 30 deg heat (did you see them side boobs at fine leg??) plus a delicious straight six off the middle of the bat from O.Cunningham led to 11 runs bagged off the first over. However, Oliver (11) was out next over and Lloyd (8) stuck around until the 8th before the partnership of Fatty and Tasty began. Overall, 73 runs off 18.2 overs ensued and proved to be the most convincing period of GCC’s day. The recent introduction of Vinay into the attack led to the demise of the Captain (42) and the beginning of a spell that led to Vinay getting 6-19 (best ever figures we heard, only ever got 2-3 **sigh**).

Macleod went first ball not picking up a straight one, Murtaza (9) struck a few before meeting the same end. Steve S (5) bowled, Vinay. Ludo (10) bowled, Vinay. Chancellor (0) LBW, Vinay. Gosh. Somewhere in the middle of the carnage, Tasty (54) was bowled by Steve (the Top Geezer who got stung by a bee a few weeks previous). A comical run out of Metronome (3) finished the innings in the 38th over, all out for 157. At least something to have a bowl at.

Tea came and went (stuffed vine leaves anyone? No) and GCC went out onto the field with much to do, but with such a beautiful audience to please the mood was good. A potential run out in the first over didn’t come off, but did come about in the 5th over with the score on 24, Mike run out on 9 by someone. Sadly, only 1 more wicket was to fall, that of swishing Hassan (49 off 38), bowled by speedy Murtaza in the 13th over. ‘Room found the other 82 runs slowly at first, thanks in part to a few maidens by Tasty, but gained momentum as Richard smelted loose bowling during the middle overs, finishing with 56 at a run a ball, supported by the sensation Vinay (18). Strongroom needed only 25 overs to reach the target, ably assisted by 26 extras, our ever present foe.

Alas, there was a strong turnout at the pub round the corner with conversations flitting between the day’s action and recent poor results (6 losses on the bounce). However, attention turned to the upcoming tour de Oxfordshire and who’s up for the night’s England Rugby game. With hindsight of England’s misery away in Paris that night with a slightly lop-sided performance to boot, it would have proved too much if we did stick around. Highlander
