GCC v Gaieties, Saturday 24th June 2017

Gallery Fields SE21 - 40 Overs - Cloudy with Sunny Intervals

Saturday saw the welcoming of old friends The Gaieties to the newly established @eataldesco fortress of Gallery Fields. A last minute withdrawal of Matt saw a debut handed to James Bradley, a top performer in winter nets, the wicket keeper gloves passed to ex-skipper Jamie and a further debut for South East London’s own Michael Hooper lookalike, Alex Klimcke.

Struggling to only nine players for the start time (James - previous obligations, Saj - just Saj time) we took the field in perfect conditions. Kiera was more undulating, spongy and variable this week owing to a few sharp showers the night before.

Schneider and Jones opened up for Gaieties quickly reaching 48 for the fist wicket. The only chance coming from a slash to gully that The Chancellor got a hand to but put down. Eventually Cunners took advantage of some movement in the pitch taking the off stump of Jones. Then followed a long hard slog in the field. Schneider, joined by Crowe put on a further 101 up until the 26th over when Crowe fell to a brilliant catch by Cunners at long on (moving from long off) off The Chancellor.

The run rate remained broadly consistent at 6/over with regular wickets every 30 runs or so. Cunners managed to break Schnieder’s off stump placing himself in contention for a Sandwich Moment but was quickly outdone by Bradley’s excellent catch at Deep Mid Wicket - the ball almost entered the London City flight path!

Gaieties finished their innings at 254 for 5. If we were honest with ourselves some poor fielding gifted the opposition 20-30 runs. Body behind the ball on the boundary chaps. On the positive side we only gave 7 extras of which 3 were leg byes so well done to Jamie for some tidy work. Cunners finished with 32-3, Chancellor 26-1, Navratil 49-1

GCC’s innings started with quiet optimism. The conditions and pitch meant that 255 was achievable. A stable start by David and Olly took us to 46 for the first wicket with some trademark hitting from Olly. Jamie came in next battling his way to 50 as part of an entertaining 59 run partnership with Cunners. A solid 20/20 style knock from Bradley (33 off 24 balls) attempted to bring us close to the target but GCC fell short with 224 off our allocated 40 overs.

Credit to The Gaieties. They batted well and bowled very tight lines restricting the boundaries. As mentioned earlier our errors in the field probably took the game away from us. However after the easy win against Roehampton and a battle against Bengal Troopers this is the type of game we required to sharpen ourselves for this Sunday against the Auld Enemy The Pretenders.

Locally brewed Chelsea Blond beers were provided after the game and the recipient of the @eataldesco Sandwich moment sandwich was James Bradley. His excellent catch, quick fire innings and last minute addition saved us from capitulation.
